Free Education
Quality primary and secondary schooling at absolutely no cost to families — because a child's future should never depend on a parent's wallet.
Before The Makoko Dream, most children in the waterfront had never set foot inside a classroom. The nearest school was across land and water, and even if a family could get their child there, fees, uniforms and books put the door firmly shut.
We opened a different kind of door — one that asks for nothing and gives everything. Today, over 2,000 children are enrolled across our schools, learning from qualified, full-time teachers in structured classrooms aligned to national curriculum standards.
Our focus is on literacy and numeracy first — the foundation every child needs to navigate the world. After-school tutoring sessions give extra support to those who need it, and our graduation rates continue to climb year after year.
Health Outreach
Regular medical clinics, nutrition programmes, and health education bringing essential care to a community that formal services rarely reach.
Healthcare in Makoko is scarce and expensive. The nearest clinic is a long boat ride away, and for families living on a few dollars a day, a doctor's visit is a luxury they simply cannot afford. Children fall sick from malaria, waterborne diseases, and malnutrition — and too often, a treatable condition becomes a crisis.
The Makoko Dream brings healthcare to the community. Our outreach clinics provide free medical check-ups and screenings, malaria prevention campaigns, maternal and child health support, and clean water and hygiene education. We partner with volunteer health professionals who give their time and skill to keep families healthy.
When a child is healthy, they can learn. When a mother is supported, the whole family rises. Health is not a side programme — it is the foundation everything else stands on.
Solar Energy
Solar-powered classrooms keep lights on and students learning — even when the grid fails, the Makoko Dream keeps running.
Lagos's electrical grid is unreliable at the best of times — and in Makoko, formal grid connection is almost non-existent. Generators are expensive to run, noisy, and pollute the air children breathe. When the lights go out, learning stops.
We solved this with the most abundant resource on the Lagos Lagoon: sunlight. Solar panels on our school buildings now power lighting, fans, and learning devices throughout the day. No fuel costs. No noise. No fumes. Just clean, quiet energy that keeps classrooms running.
Solar power has also unlocked something unexpected — evening study sessions. Children who help their families during the day can now study after sunset under bright, reliable lights. It is a small revolution powered by the sun.
School Bus on Water
A repurposed boat ferries children safely across the Lagos Lagoon every school day — because where there's a will, there's a waterway.
In a community built on stilts above the lagoon, there are no school buses on roads — because there are no roads. Before The Makoko Dream, children who wanted to attend school had to cross open water in overloaded canoes, often without life jackets, at the mercy of weather and tides. For many parents, the risk was simply too great.
In 2017, we launched the Water School Bus — a purpose-fitted boat operated by trained community members that safely ferries children from multiple pick-up points across the lagoon to our schools every morning, and back every afternoon. Every child wears a life jacket. Every crossing is supervised.
It removed the single biggest barrier to attendance. Enrollment jumped. Drop-out rates fell. And parents who once kept children home out of fear now wave them off with confidence each morning — because where there's a will, there's a waterway.
Back-to-School Drives
Annual drives supplying uniforms, bags, books, and stationery so every enrolled child shows up on day one ready to learn and proud to be there.
In Nigeria, a child without a uniform is often turned away at the school gate — not because the school is cruel, but because dignity and belonging are part of the culture of learning. For families in Makoko, the cost of uniforms, bags, books and stationery can be the difference between sending a child to school and keeping them home.
Every year, before the new term begins, The Makoko Dream runs a Back-to-School Drive — distributing uniforms, backpacks, pencils, notebooks, crayons and everything else a child needs to walk through the classroom door with their head held high.
Hundreds of families are supported each year. These drives are powered entirely by donor contributions — and the smiles on the first day of term are proof that a uniform is never just fabric. It is a statement: I belong here. I am a student.
Community Support
From food drives to financial literacy workshops for parents — we support the whole family, because a child thrives when their community thrives.
Education does not happen in a vacuum. A child who comes to school hungry cannot learn. A parent who cannot feed the family cannot prioritise attendance. The challenges of waterfront life — food insecurity, lack of skills training, limited economic opportunity — touch every part of a child's world.
Our Community Support programme wraps around the family. Food and nutrition assistance reaches the most vulnerable households. Parent empowerment workshops teach financial literacy, small-business skills, and savings strategies. Youth and adults gain access to vocational training that opens new livelihoods.
We also facilitate community dialogue — giving residents a voice in the decisions that shape their lives — and partner with global NGOs to bring resources and expertise that amplify local effort. Because when the community rises, every child rises with it.
